Gabrielle Designs Paddington Bear, Late 1970's. All the way from 'Darkest Peru' via Paddington Station comes this loveable teddy. Originally introduced by Bond in 1958, Paddington was illustrated in the first books by Peggy Fortnum. Due to the popularity of the books Shirley Clarkson (mother of presenter Jeremy) successfully obtained the licence after initially making Paddingtons for friends and family. Gabrielle Designs was born out of this and continued to produced toys in Doncaster, England until late 1990's when Shirley retired. The first copywrite was registered 1972 and original paddingtons like this one have copywrite printed in blue on a white label sewn into the back seam. Paddingtons from the first years of production have a simplified label, this dates from mid 1970's when the label was enlarged to incorporated other copywrites. 1970's Paddingtons have a distingtive shape and wear Dunlop wellingtons rather than later 1980's 'PB' wellies. This Padington is in superb condition, he sports a wool felt coat and hat, Dunlop wellies, original swing luggage label and he is in the more unusual green and yellow colourway.  He has no major fading or moth damage as these bears are prone too, his swing label is worn and scuffed but is still in tack.  A fantastic collectable bear. 46m (18")
